Depression is a horrible illness. It can eat away at you mind, soul and even physically harm you. I’ve known individuals to have all kinds of severe health problems due to it. How do you take care of yourself?

Depression is a horrible illness. Many people don’t understand it at all and blame those suffering from it. They will insist that snap out of it, pull himself together, get over it, get busy, go out and brush off the cobwebs and live. Too bad for anyone who has been there to understand that these words betray that they not only understand but are critical and judging, condemning them for what they are as if they have chosen to be enduring this way. Depression may strike you in small ways and very serious ways for a little time or a long time.

How to care for yourself while you are depressed. There are many different things that cause depression. A woman who is expecting may get it because she is anxious about the baby, she may also get it because her hormones get completely haywire and she struggles to cope with the feelings this creates within her. When hormones get out of control this can cause not only blue moods but fear, anxiety, poor memory, inability to concentrate and a whole lot of other things which we think are caused by feelings and the brain. Your brain is connected to your gut so your diet and your hormones can influence it. One of the things you can do to help your brain so you feel better in such a situation is to increase the amount of prebiotic food you eat and increase the biotics you use. This might, if done properly, have the result of your diet being improved in such a way that your hormones are less of an issue and you feel better. It also makes you feel more energetic, sleep better and all kinds of other things that are beneficial at the time and to try to prevent the domino effect that problems can cause. If you can’t sleep, for instance, you are guaranteed to feel more depressed and less energetic, these are things that can become a vicious cycle.

If you can’t work due to depression you will worry more, you will worry more if you are stuck inside with the blues and can’t accomplish much and have too much time to sit around thinking about it. If you can keep yourself busier, even in minor ways, this can make the day go by faster and distract you from these emotional pains.

If you want to look to someone for help look at these people – an expert listener, pay to have a confidential agony aunt online, pay to hire a low-budget psychic email reading emails are fitting because you can find yourself sleeping restlessly and can never guarantee to be awake or wakeful enough at different times. You can also get advice from a person such as an online advice columnist agony aunts. Which can be online and on a freebie. You also have the services of a new age life coach although many of these are not actually qualified staff more people of good heart wanting to take you through it all and in others beware they may just want your cash. Select whoever it is you will be going with with great caution.

A word of warning also. I just talked to a naturopath about stomach aches due to a stomach ulcer. The guy told me that he could help me if I paid him (what would be a small fortune) for his train fare to come visit and leave and for massaging my stomach. The whole idea was foolish because (a) there are perfectly enough masseurs – genuine ones – who live much nearer to me whom I could go to easily and quickly without all the cost or having one come to my home. And it makes more sense to hire someone who is a professional masseur for massage! But I also think that he believed that a massage would heal an ulcer, I’ve read and studied the subject and that is not possible. Perhaps he was in over his head with the subject. I was also uncomfortable since he was an old man and the idea of an old man whom I didn’t even know coming to massage my stomach felt a bit nasty and sleazy, considering I was paying him so much for it.

How to help yourself if depressed Think carefully about any help that is offered. Too often it is from someone who knows nothing, knows too little, selfishly or stupidly. I have discovered with most things in life that people readily say that they can help because it makes them feel good, but it doesn’t always make it so.

You can go and see a doctor and take or at least try antidepressants. Serotonin is what they mess about with in the brain. You can take a natural one, herbs, and some people find it easier to get on with these. You need to get the balance, otherwise too much serotonin can be an issue as well i.e. stomach cramp, insomnia or anxiety worse etc.

It will take a while to sort it all out and clearly if you are depressed because your loved one has just died or you have just found out you have a terminal illness no tablets or talking is going to do the trick, it is natural to be devastated by such a terrible life-changing event and it would be odd if just taking tablets or talking to people sorted it all out. Beware then of anybody who tells you that such things will succeed.
